Yesterday and Today
Sorry I didn't write last night. The kids had a very busy day. Roberto wanted them up and eating breakfast by 8:30. They then packed their lunches, rigged, launched and began training seconds from the dock. As I understand it, they worked their way through the Bay then out to the Lake for a very full day. The weather was very nice! Georgia and her Mom arrived around 4:00. They had a long, inconvenient trip. This seems to be the story of the summer! At nearly that same time Roberto and the kids were getting back to the dock. The kids had a snack, then swam and played for about an hour. After that, Roberto sat them down to review videos he had taken of their training. In some cases the videos were of the group performing drills and in other cases the video was taken from inside an Opti. I got to watch and listen a little because I was making dinner. It was very interesting. Sometimes he showed the kids the videos frame by frame, pointing out things they had done well and also, not so well. With the very detailed pictures the camera took from inside the Opti, he was able to show and teach the kids about the importance of the placement of their hands, feet, knees, where they sat, how they held the line and the tiller and so on. It was more detailed than I can explain in the blog. I can tell you, Jessica has never had that kind of detailed Opti training. It was really cool and I am happy to report, all the kids were very interested in what was shown and everyone was listening carefully. We then had dinner. Then indoor s'mores. The kids love those! They watched alittle TV. Then bed.
As long as the weather is good, I think this will be the pattern for the next few days, so I won't bore you with all these details again, but I will try to keep you up to date with the weather and the sailing. Please feel free to email or Txt. llietz@rochester.rr.com 585-233-0355.
Ingrid made us a large lasagna. We going to have that tonight. She also brought fresh caught salmon, we will have that tomorrow. Thank you for the help Ingrid!!

Thunder Storm Warnings and Rain
Roberto tried to have the kids sail as much as was possible today, but the weather just did not work with us! Jillian arrived tonight. Georgia will be here Saturday at noon. Cameron will get here Monday. The kids love to be together and work great as a group. Everyone is always included. It's so nice to see! The forecast for tomorrow and the next few days, is no rain! Tonight we ate my Mom's homemade chicken noodle soup, grilled sandwiches, and cut vegetables for dinner along with my Mom's cookies for dessert.

Roberto and the Optis are here!
The kids slept in again. They were all Very hungry today, I think they have revived! (I noticed this at lunch when they each ate two big sandwiches and thought these are not the same kids I fed yesterday! That's a good thing! What a terrible trip - plus all that heat in Texas! They are so Tough!) In the afternoon Roberto and Bengy got here. The kids all worked very hard to get all the boats and all the stuff unloaded and to it's place. Roberto said they could tube again!! We tubed, had dinner, then the beautiful Opti Cupcake Cake Declan's Mom sent! I will post a pic. A movie. Then to bed. They really did not want to go, but once I got them to their place it only took 15 minutes! The kids told me Roberto will have them back to work tomorrow! Good! They are Ready!

Happy Birthday Declan!!! 11 Today!
Ceci, Mikey, Jessica, Declan and I are at Sodus Bay. The kids all slept nearly 10 hours last night. I think they needed it! Today is Delclan's 11 Birthday! We are in the process of planning something fun to do and the girls are going to bake up something yummy! The Turners called this morning. The coach boat, Roberto and the Optis will all be here tomorrow. So we are going to have some fun and then get to bed early again to be really ready for it all to start!!

After Day 3
Day 3 Recap:
The kids sailed 4 good races. There were good winds 10-20. Forecast is for 4 mph of wind Sunday (yuck). Probably just one or two races (maybe none ) will be sailed on Sunday, our last day. Check out the website for race results: https://sites.google.com/site/optinationals2011/results/results
Kids enjoyed watermelon, pretzels and carrots while derigging, took showers, checked out their results and then headed back to the hotel. We told everyone to start packing last night so more dirty laundry started coming out of the woodwork, and more this morning from one little sailor (Yippee!).
We cooked Steak and Salmon on the grill for the last night celebration at the TOWNPLACE SUITES (the concierege was nowhere to be found for a dining recommendation). Believe it or not, we had three sailor requests for salmon! I'll leave it to you to ask your son or daughter what they chose. We used the left over steak this morning for 'steak and eggs'. All was eaten up!
All kids motivated to drink two bottles before racing this morning as "Candy Talks!"
Roberto held the debriefing, and now getting ready to head for the club. Stay tuned for more....

End of Day two - Fleet splits into Gold, Silver, Bronze
Day 2 of Nationals:
Heavy wind and very hot with 3 races. All sailors completed all three, with the exception of Jessica as she unfortunately got hit in the head. A real trooper, she wanted to sail the last race but the safety commitee had her stop due to the cut. She is fine we are happy to report!.
Roberto felt that everyone did better today. Results of the first two days are used at the end of today to split the fleet into three permanent groups that will sail together for the last two days of racing. Top 75 go into gold (Ceci, Sebby and Mikey) 76to 150 go into silver (Georgia, Jessica, and Jillian) 150-220 go into Bronze.
(Cameron, Declan and Benji)
Once in your group you get your position to start in the new group. So if you were 70th then you get 70 points to start off in Gold. But if there are enough races for a drop then you will get to drop that 70th. So, effectively you are starting again today with a clean slate in your new group but the best you can do now is to get first in your group. So the best that someone in Silver can do is 76th overall for the regatta.
Coming in off the water, both Benji and Mikey got stung by Jelly Fish. Several kids from other teams did too. Both boys rallied and are OK.
We commented to the kids that not only Pinnies are helpful for Roberto to see them, the Pinnies help us to meet them with their dolly as they are coming in off the water. (With 220 + boats it can get pretty wild!) The girls have all adjusted to the bright color and we have received several compliments from other parents. All seemed to have good spirits because for the most part, they did better on day two.
Kids ate the Tex-Mex meal provided for the sailors at the club. We have been getting back to the hotel late as they do not launch until late and then are out on the water until late. This morning kids asked for Choc Chip pancakes again, so they ate that plus bacon, cereal, strawberries.
Everyone who drinks two bottles before we leave the hotel, gets large candy bar of their choice. Dehydration is a big risk because 95-99 deg and high wind.

Girls Nationals (and day ending formal dinner & dance) -Boys Day off (@ Johnson Space Center)
You all missed quite a day today.
The kids all had a ball. I will try to share it with you. The boys had a lay day so we took them to Johnson Space Center which is about 15 min away. We got there when it opened at 10am and we didn't leave until about 4 pm. The boys really enjoyed it. They got to do a tour of mission control used for the missions to the moon, saw numerous presentations from newtons laws of physics to what its like to live on the international space station, saw a complete Saturn 5 rocket, saw two movies, one on the space program, and another ending in a live talk from a guy who described the current space shuttle mission that is going on now, with live cuts to mission control and tracking of where the space shuttle was during his talk. This was mixed in with games like astronaut foosball, and simulators that let you try to land the space shuttle.
The girls did not go out again till mid afternoon. There was light air for the first two races and about 18 for the last. All the girls finished in the top half of the fleet. I think they did well but Roberto thinks they have much more potential and is looking forward to having several training days strung together at Rochester and Kingston. I will let you check out the individual results on the regatta site.
At the end of the day, they had quite a bash for the girls. It started with a formal dinner to rival a wedding reception, followed by awards and then a dance (yes they let the boys into the dance). I have to say that they really did a great job for the girls party. It was quite an event. Check out the photos of the day to follow.

Team Racing results
LOOT Team 2 Won the Silver fleet. Silver is the bottom half of all the teams (28). This was a good result that the kids should feel good about. They will tell you that they wanted to do better as they were in 6th after the first day. However, I think it is a good result. They had a bad "moving day" for day two which placed them in Delta division (best division in the bottom half) so they beat up on those guys in the last day and won all three races but could not move up to another division because it was the last day. Anyway, all smiles as you can see!
LOOT Team 1 got second place in Foxtrot division. These were mostly sailors that have never done team racing before. They won several races and beat three other teams. Good job Team LOOT!
Girls nationals tomorrow - signing off - Houston out -

Rain on and off most all day today with light wind. Finally launched at 2:15 in pouring rain for the last day of team racing. Each of our teams have won races so thats good as many of them have never team raced before. There learning curve is steep but they are learning a lot. Will send results and more later.

Our last day
Lots of tired looking kids at 7:00 AM when we began opening doors and blinds. The skipper's meeting was at 9:00 AM and Roberto wanted the kids there, rigged and ready to go.
After the trama of the orange vests subsided (while the girls were afraid they might look like pumpkins (Jessica refused to be photographed by I seeked one in - see attached), the boys kind of liked them as orange is Declan's favorite color) we all agreed they would be easy to spot and that it was a form of team bonding. (In the attached photo you can actually pick them out if you look closely so mother's do know best!)
Unfortunately as usual there was not any morning wind so we had a postponement until noon. With a successful launch Shannon and I headed back to clean up (in order to pretend to have some sense of order) prior to the arrival of the Turners tomorrow.
Two short hours later we got a call from Roberto letting us know they were coming in. By the time we got there Jillian was re-rigging her boat to go back out as the committee decided to do a Round 2 of races. Given we were now there we decided to walk to the end of the pier and got an amazing show as they were racing right off the pier ( it also heloed that it was easy to see our team as they had the orange vests on). To date the racing has been too far away to watch from shore so this was a special treat. Out A team did pretty well and won 3 of 4 of the Round 1 races seeding them in the second group. A Team then unfortunately lost the next 2 races. Our B team lost its first 4 races in Round 1 an as such got them placed in the fifth group where they proceeded to win the next 2 races.
We had a great dinner of grilled chicken, salad, cole slaw, potato salad with desert of ice cream and cookies. The boys went to bed without a peep at 9:30.
We enjoyed our week and are pleased to report that all the children are well fed, mostly well rested, all wounds are healing and that the kids will have greater sympathy for Declan and why he is the way he is now knowing what his parents are really like :)!

Was it really an off day?
All were up early with a great debrief by Roberto encouraging the children to be more focused on sailing and less focused on everything else. A little less slumber party and a lot more sail boat racing. He discussed the importance of boat preparation and the first 3 minutes of the race. If they get 25% of what he teaches they will all someday be great sailors!
We transitioned to the yacht club where we spent the next 5 hours measuring boats, sails, dagger boards, rudders and anything else they could find. After sanding center boards, moving sail numbers, procuring new protest flags and a broad assortment of other activities the entire team is offically measured and ready to go for Nationals.
By popular demand we spent the rest of the afternoon at the "mall". Over the course of 2.5 hours we procured clothing for Roberto's children, 2 Build a Bears, a Pilanimal (a stuffed animal that turns into a pillow and back to a stuffed animal ), a baseball cap (with some logo they tried to explain to me but frankly was lost on me regardless of how hard they tried), the world's shortest shorts (you can tell we do not have girls as I asked if they got a discount since they were missing half the fabric of normal shorts) and an assortment of other "girl stuff".
A dinner of pizza and salad was followed by a 2 hour debrief by Roberto on team racing. Turns out after last year's great LOOT performance, the current LOOT team is slotted in the first round against LISOT (last years #1 ranked team and by all accounts still the kick ass team) which will likely result in complete destruction of the current LOOT. Roberto tried to impart a lifetime of team racing learning on the children (the majority of whom have never team raced and in general seem to have only a vague sense of the rules of racing) in 2 short hours with all on a full stomach of Texas' best pizza. We have high hopes but all have been forewarned when the results are posted tomorrow :)! We are thinking of it as a great learning experience!
As if a small gift from God, Texas Comcast went down during the Roberto debrief and for the first time since we got here there was no TV blarring (recognizing Shannon and I do not have cable so the idea of the TV always being on has been hard to adjust to in these tight quarters). So a dessert of brownies and ice cream with then all to bed as tomorrow begins a week of getting up at 7:00 AM every day...
As proof that your chidren are alive and well here are some great photos (think we have figured out the technology despite our advanced age:)!): Notice the creativity of the LOOT lego block that the boys built at the mall to entertain themselves while the girls "shopped"....
We are ready to start team racing with everyone in good spirits and good health!!

Rainy and Overcast
Reporting in on the final day from the Houston Yacht club. Here are the preliminary results:
Ceci 22, 20-5
Sebby 58, 45-33
Mikey bfd, 46-51
Jessica bfd, 76-58
Georgia 31, 69-60
Jillian dns, 63-63
Cameron 15, 89-72
Declan 51, 86-87
Lachlain 55, 92-88
Benjamin bfd, 78-90
First two numbers are today's races and final standing. Though we think that Ceci will be penalized 20% for forgetting to sign out today which will push here out of the top 5 unfortunately.
The day was overcast with forecast for heavy thunderstorms. We thought they might not even get one race let alone two. Shannon and I spend the day at the club waiting for the crew to come back in and yet the weather held and the PRO got off two races....
We stayed for the awards cermony and had to endure 8 year olds telling jokes and six year olds singing songs on the PA for 2 hours while we waited for the results to finalize.
We are trying to see if we can post some photos this time

Trials and tribulations
Today was a tough day on the water. We launched earlier than yesterday with all the boats on the water by 12:15. Unfortunately there was no wind. As the wind began to build so did the storm front and the first race was called in the final minute of the start sequence. All the boats came back in and we sat in the rain for 90 minutes. The boats went back out and in the next 4 hours the PRO got off only 2 races.
On the race course we had highs and lows today. Ceci pulled a 4th and a 6th potentially putting her in first place for the girls. On the other end of the spectrum, Declan dumped three times and spent more time in the water than racing. Benji got caught on the wrong side of the line with the black flag up and Jillian broke a line connecting her mainsheet rachet block to the hull...
Dinner was a real winner with tacos, strawberry spinach salad, queso, salsa, guac, chips and cilantro rice. Homemade brownies with chocolate chip mint ice cream topped it all off.....hardly any left overs. It is simply amazing what 10 hungry children can eat.
Early to bed tonight and another day of racing tomorrow.

End of the day
Everyone had a pretty good day on the water. Long day but weather was good (though very hot - 99 F) and the wind was fairly consistent. They sailed till 7:00 pm and then a late dinner back at the hotel. Results are posted and everyone is pretty happy with the first day
All to bed now and ready for another bog day tomorrow!

So far so good
Shannon got Lesley off to the airport with no problem. Hopefully she has had a good trip. We are very appreciative of her staying an extra day and sleeping on the pull out sofa to help get us (true newbies) acquainted with what it takes to run the LOO Team! Thank you Lesley.
The kids started the second half of Texas race week today back at the Houston Yatch club. The morning was spent rerigging boats and getting the lay of the land. Devin (with help from Roberto) got Lachlain (Declan's little brother and future LOOT member - we hope) all rigged up. To be seen how the 9 year will do in the white fleet?
Shannon and Devin have found the grocery store and the Target so the Roberto and the children will not starve. As such, we have a great evening planned with hamburgers on the grill, corn on the cob, potato salad and coleslaw. Dessert will be what is left of the ice cream, cookies and strawberries.
We have yet to figure out the photo up loading but tomorrow is another day!
Still on the water @ 6:25pm. Will post results later tonight.
